Abstract

This chapter aims to bring the study of trust and scholarship on home into conversation. After the philosophies on space and place had been misused to make nationalistic claims to territory in the first half of the twentieth century, home only became a topic of interest again after the spatial turn in the social sciences and humanities. Since then, there have been many studies on home in geography, building on a variety of approaches, ranging from the study of atmospheres in phenomenology over specific home-making practices to uncovering the patriarchal and heteronormative structures within the home. In a critical examination of home, the aim is to establish home as a complex and often ambivalent concept. After outlining the phenomenological tradition based on Heidegger, the practice-oriented tradition, and the feminist critique of home, this chapter concludes with a reinterpretation of home as a trust relationship. This last section will not only highlight the relational understanding of home but also make the case that a profound understanding of home as a space of trust is necessary to understand the impact of the housing crisis on individuals, communities, and urban societies.

Most frequently, the word home is used for “the place where a person or animal dwells” (OED 2020), which is also the sense of home closest to its original meaning. The word home derives from Old English ham, originating from Proto-Germanic haimaz, meaning “dwelling place, house, abode, fixed residency” (Etymonline 2020). Yet, there are many more definitions of home in the OED. Home is “the seat of domestic life and interests,” “the family or social unit occupying a house,” or even “a refuge, a sanctuary; a place or region to which one naturally belongs or where one feels at ease” (OED 2020).

2
It is crucial to point out that home in this sense does not solely refer to a house or place of residence but that it is also a matter of homeland, identity, and belonging. While the English language has only one term for these various experiences, many languages distinguish between home in the sense of homeland, home country, or hometown (German: Heimat; French: patrie; Spanish: patria) and home in the sense of house or place of residence (German: Zuhause; French: maison; Spanish: hogar and casa). These concepts are of course not exactly equivalent, but serves as examples of various linguistic interpretations of home.

John Steinbeck’s novel The Grapes of Wrath was first published in 1939 as a response to and a critique of American politics during the Great Depression. It follows a farmers family on their way from Oklahoma to California, illustrating powerfully not only the pain of losing home but also the hardships of trying to grow new roots in California. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940, and Steinbeck received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.

4
From T. S. Eliot: “East Coker,” Four Quartets.

5
The term describes that women are confined to the domestic sphere even if they work outside the home as class/caste and patriarchal structures do not allow them to do any other work nor inhabit any other spheres of public life. Yet, the term domesticated also alludes to the women accepting their role within the home and household, as they have been “tamed” (Roy 2003).
