Abstract

The development of humor in Japanese, politicized, graphic art has a long and illustrious history ranging from early manifestations of fûshiga (satirical drawings) via jiji manga (Western style cartoons) to the modern manga media. Nowadays, Japanese manga culture manifests itself as a powerful tool across the political divide to shape domestic as well as global perception of the nation. While the open denigration of politics via pop-cultural representations is generally regarded as a cultural taboo in Japanese society, the visual medium of manga provides a powerful counter-hegemonic space where discontent, Criticism, and satire can be expressed more freely than via conventional media. This chapter will not only illustrate how expressions of political satire and humor reflect changes in Japanese cultural attitudes and the society’s status quo, but also how graphic artists, satirists, and cartoonists, have helped to shape popular attitudes about landmark historical events, thereby actively engaging in the political decision-making process. The chapter further examines how today’s brand of graphic political humor utilized Japan’s ideogrammatic culture to defamiliarize political norms and thereby might be more influential than ever in manipulating attitudes towards the Japanese nation in the global political amphitheater.

All translations are mine unless otherwise stated. In Japanese, vowels can either be short or long; a diacritical mark, for example, â, ê, î, ô, or û over the vowel indicates that it is a long vowel. Personal names are given in the Japanese order i.e., family name first.

The word “manga” will be treated throughout this chapter as a plural word denoting an entire spectrum of forms and styles within a single medium (similar to “fish” as the plural).

While the original intention was to include images from Shôri no hi made published by Kodansha as a collected edition of Tezuka’s unpublished works in 2012, our request for copyright clearance was denied. The reason provided was that the work was produced before Tezuka’s professional debut when he was 16 years old. And since they are of a personal nature and are not published as commercial works, they were deemed inappropriate. Given that they were published in Japanese, I tend to disagree with this verdict, but still respect the assessment of the publisher and I have therefore removed the images. For readers interested in a sample please refer to Holmberg (2012).

Shaka Bontarô’s publication of Mikki no katsuyaku (The activities of Mickey) published by Nakamura Shoten in 1934 was one of the first to popularize the character in Japan.

Fuku-chan was a yonkoma or “four cell” manga series that appeared from 1936 until 1971 in Japanese newspapers and belongs to the longest running strips in Japanese comic history. It also produced three films during the Asia Pacific conflict for propaganda purposes.

Developed by avant-garde manga artists Tatsumi Yoshihiro and Matsumoto Masahiko, gekiga literally refers to “dramatic pictures” that focus on more serious manga topics for adult consumption.

Aoki (2016) noted that there appears to be no official data on the number of house husbands in Japan, but numbers can be obtained indirectly from women who claimed spousal tax exemptions for their husband. In fiscal 2013 this number reached around 110,000—more than double compared to 40,000 in 1997.

This is not just the case for manga; similar educational, narrative methodologies have been employed in the European graphic tradition. See for example, Eric Heuvel (2009) that narrates the controversial story of the Netherlands’ involvement in the Second World War, and its sequel Heuvel et al. (2009), relating the main facts about the Holocaust told through the experiences of a fictional family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
