Abstract

As the COVID-19 pandemic has become a troublesome global issue these past few years, the worsening of global food security has been a vital challenge to be solved. This study investigates if there is a positive or negative relationship between a country’s GDP per capita before COVID-19 and the change in estimated food insecurity rate before and after COVID-19, and between a country’s confirmed COVID-19 rate and the change in estimated food insecurity rate. In the study, the author acquired three open data sources online, created box and whisker plots and scatterplots to visualize the distributions of variables and linear relationships between the independent variables and the dependent variable, and used significance tests to evaluate the significance of the linear models. The result shows no significant negative linear relationship between a country’s GDP per capita and the change in estimated food insecurity rate and no significant positive linear relationship between a country’s confirmed COVID-19 rate and the change in estimated food insecurity rate.
