Commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Truck & Bus is planning to launch its first trucks with hydrogen combustion engines in 2025. The small series is set to comprise around 200 units.

The new MAN hTGX is to be delivered to customers in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Iceland and selected non-European countries. It will initially be offered with the 6x2 and 6x4 axle variants and, in addition to a high payload, should enable a maximum range of up to 600 km. The H45 hydrogen combustion engine used is based on the D38 diesel unit and is produced at the engine and battery plant in Nuremberg. It has an output of 383 kW (520 hp) and a torque of 2,500 Nm at 900 to 1,300 rpm. The direct injection of hydrogen into the engine is intended to ensure particularly fast power delivery. Refueling can be done in less than 15 minutes with hydrogen compressed to 700 bar (CG H2), the tank capacity is 56 kg.

With less than 1g CO2/tkm, the MAN hTGX will meet the criteria as a "zero-emission vehicle" under the EU's new planned CO2 legislation. The heavy-duty truck with hydrogen combustion engine is intended for special applications such as construction work, tank transportation or timber transport. There should also be advantages for use in areas without sufficient charging infrastructure or in markets where there are already sufficient hydrogen filling stations. "We will continue to research fuel cell technology based on battery technology and hydrogen. H2 fuel technology is also in preparation at MAN. However, it will be several years before the technology is really ready for the market and competitive", says Dr. Frederik Zohm, Executive Board Member for Research and Development at MAN.
