Abstract

This introductory chapter highlights the importance of the issue of providing employment opportunities for people with disabilities. It also notes the need for a deeper understanding of the disability‒employment relationship. It is a reality that more than one-tenth of the world’s population has a disability and people with disabilities are often deprived of their rightful chances to have a job and live life to the fullest. To address this state of affairs, Article 27 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and Target 8.5 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were introduced by the United Nations. Despite these efforts, people with disabilities still face difficulties in obtaining employment in the labour market.

There are two terms, “people with disabilities” and “persons with disabilities”, which are interchangeably used in the literature on disabilities studies. The term “people” is normally used to refer to a “collective” group. By contrast, the term “persons” is more often used to refer to a specific minor group (World Health Organization, 2022). Furthermore, “people with disabilities” is more commonly used than “people with disability” among researchers. For example, the number of results for “people with disabilities” is 654,000 and the number of results for “people with disability” is 46,000 in Google Scholar. Based on these considerations, this study uses the term “people with disabilities”.

Analysis of the patterns in natural and social phenomena is the core interest in any scientific field. There is a new definition of mathematics as the “science of patterns”. Similarly, the probability theory could be defined as the science dealing with the “patterns of chance” (Devlin, 2012; Resnik, 1981). In this context, economic science could be defined as a social science which deals with the “patterns of economic data”.
